Scheduling a set time every day for homework is one of the best things that we can do for both our kids and ourselves. We are creatures of habit. We tend to fall comfortably into daily routines. Because we humans like routines so much, it only makes sense to schedule homework for the same time every day. Sometimes, things are going to come up which will mess up our routine, but that’s life, and that’s to be expected. The important thing is to have a routine that benefits us, even if it is disrupted from time to time.
Another secret to getting our kids to do homework and thus bettering themselves is for us parents to also do homework. We are our kids’ leaders. And the best way to lead is to lead by example, right? If we want our kids to get better by doing homework, then we need to set an example of us getting better too by doing homework! Parents, believe it or not, it really is not that hard or that painful to do. We could get a book or even some kind of magazine, sit down at the family’s homework table at the designated time, and read it while our kids doing their homework.
These two simple things of scheduling homework time for our kids and then joining them in an effort to lead by example can go a long way in helping our children do better in school, and thus better in life. Remember, the habits that we help our kids develop and then build while they are still young and in school are the same habits that they will carry over to their adult years.
Now, as my Granddaddy always said, “Go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us.” Be sure to schedule family homework time because it is the best way to make sure homework gets done on time and better and brighter futures are being built. And once again parents, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
